SAC Smith has served in many roles in the FBI over the past twenty (20) years—including violent crime, counterintelligence and counterterrorism. He joined the FBI in 1999 where he was first assigned as Special Agent in Kansas City. In 2005, he transferred to the FBI Counterterrorism Division. In 2013, he led the Joint Terrorism Task Force and was Special Agent in Charge of Counterterrorism and Cyber Matters for resident agencies. In 2015, he became Chief of Staff to the FBI Director where he served before entering his assignment as Special Assistant to the Director in 2016. SAC Smith also led the FBI counterterrorism task force in Bagram, Afghanistan. Prior to his FBI career, he served as an officer in the United States Army Airborne Rapid Deployment Program as US Army Ranger. At the Geauga Bluecoats virtual event, SAC Smith will discuss the current threat environment as it relates to domestic violent extremism. He will highlight the challenges with the counterterrorism fight and detail recent cases in Northeast Ohio. SAC Smith will address how the FBI works closely with its partners to neutralize terrorist cells and operatives here in the United States— along with identifying and disrupting terrorist networks.

He has served over twenty-nine (29) years as a veteran of the Lakewood Police Department as well as Unit Commander for the Westshore Enforcement Bureau SWAT of Northeast Ohio.
